Obituary

Patricia Anne (Bunker) Sperry "Patty", at the age of 95 passed away peacefully at her home in Provo, Utah on Monday, December 12, 2022 and returned back to our Heavenly Father. Patty was born June 8, 1927 to Vernon Earl and Rose (Stewart) Bunker in the then small town of Las Vegas, Nevada. With a population of just over 4,500 people it was too small for a hospital, so she was born in a midwife's home.

When Patty was 15, she wanted to start working to earn her own spending money. After applying for many jobs and being turned down for each one, she found out via a friend, that her dad had talked to each one of the owners to not give her a job. Determined to find employment, she didn't tell her dad about the next interview and was hired on as a telephone company switchboard operator. Patty was always strong willed and once she made up her mind there was very little that held her back.

After graduating from Las Vegas High School at the age of 17, she went on to attend the University of Utah for two years and then came home for the summer. During the break she went on a date in a small airplane that did not end well. Unfortunately the plane crashed and Patty spent the next year rehabbing. The doctors wanted to amputate her leg. She begged her Mom to not allow this to happen so it was agreed to take her to see doctors in Los Angeles. To save her leg they decided to put in a metal plate. She was also told because of the plane crash, that she most likely would not be able to have children.

Patty's dad at this time told her she had to go to Brigham Young University if she wanted him to pay for her college. She agreed and transferred to BYU. It was there that she met the love of her life Sidney Lyman Sperry. They met at the library where he asked her out. She told him she already had a date. Undeterred, he then proceeded listing the days of the week and told her to stop when she was free to go out with him. His persistence paid off. They were married June 28, 1950 in the Salt Lake LDS temple. Before they were married they openly discussed the possibility of not being able to have children; Patty, because of the crash and Lyman, because of radiation treatment for his cancer. They felt they were a match made in heaven!

Patty was meant to be a Queen. She was a Rodeo Queen, Jr Prom Queen, University of Utah Snow Queen and Lyman's Queen. One of her happiest childhood memories was when she was voted to be the Jr. Prom Queen. Her cousins Bob Wells and Martin Hardy were her campaign co-chairs. She loved her cousins.

If you know Patty, you know these are a few of her favorite words: free, discount, on sale, BOGO, half price, fire-sale, closeout, rebate, low-price and green light special. She was willing to drive far and wide for a bargain!

During Patty's child bearing years she had promised the Lord she would have as many children as he would bless her with - and He did indeed bless her. She had TEN wonderful kids born in four states: New York (1), Nevada (2), California (5) and Utah (2). She was also heavily involved with all of Lyman's businesses. She had a very keen mind and had many interests including: traveling, reading, sports, politics, theater, and movies. She also served in various callings for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, had a strong testimony of her Savior Jesus Christ and wanted all her family to know this.

Patty is survived by all ten of her children: Tricia (Randy) Brown, Brent (Robin), Robert (Annette), Greg (Darla), Barb (Ron) Evans, Steve (Dianne), Diane Carter, Will (Lish), Ron (Annie), Kristen (Rob) Baker, 53 grandchildren, 111 Great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings: Bill (Shirley) Bunker, Jolene (Kent) Nelson, Barry (Emily) Bunker and many nieces and nephews.

Patty is preceded in death by her loving husband Lyman, her parents, her son-in-law Mark Carter, her grandson Danny Sperry and many of Lyman's brothers and sisters.

Mom - God be with you until we meet again! We love you…
