Obituary

Our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother Phyllis Clemene Maluy Likes, a long-time resident of Orem, Utah passed away Saturday January 26, 2019 in Alpine, Utah. Phyllis was born January 29, 1930 to Mary Christine Darrow and Clement Maluy in Fruita, Colorado. She grew up on the farm in New Liberty working in the fields with her father and brother and grew to love animals. She attended New Liberty School and Fruita High School. She was very talented in music and sang several solos in school, and later sang in choirs and performed for weddings and funerals. She also played the piano, took lessons, competed and performed well into her adult life. She married Homer C. Likes December 2, 1946. They lived in New Liberty on the Clyde W. Likes farm until January 1958 when they moved to Moab, Utah. They had two children, Dennis Wayne and Retta-Marie. In Moab she attended Grand County High School with her son Dennis and graduated in 1965. They moved to Price, Utah in 1965 where she attended some classes at College of Eastern Utah. In 1966 they moved to Orem, Utah where they lived until 2005. While in Orem, she attended many classes at BYU, particularly Family History classes. Phyllis joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1950. She learned to do genealogy research and family history. This passion lasted the rest of her life. She served at the BYU Family History Center for 30 years. She formed Likes Publishing and published many books, mostly family histories. She and Homer spent 15 years compiling and writing Route 1 Mack, Colorado , a history of the New Liberty/Mack area and all the original homesteaders and their families. The children and grandchildren of Phyllis (known as "Mony" to the family) have benefited from her incredible sewing and photography talents. She sewed everything from clothes to stuffed animals, custom jeans, and formals. She did macramé` and crocheted beautiful afghans. She spent many years and dollars taking pictures of scenery and events. She could be seen at all of her grandchildren's games, competitions, dances, and weddings getting the "perfect pictures." We have often said that her grandchildren would have no record of their lives if it had not been for Mony taking pictures. She is survived by her sisters Marilyn Pacheco and Lee Ann Blaney both living in Grand Junction, Colorado; her children Dennis Wayne Likes (Susan), Highland, Utah and Retta-Marie Bevans (Kim), Springville, Utah; 17 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren. Her family was her greatest love, and she was devoted to them every day of her life. We will all miss her sweet infectious smile, her loving tender touch, her wise counsel, and her beautiful red hair. Heaven has just received an angel to sing in Heavenly choirs. A special Thank You to the staff at River Meadows for their love and tender care of our sweet mother. She knew and loved each of the residents and staff and talked about them as if they were her family. We also appreciate the service of the Paradise Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Funeral services will be Saturday February 2, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in LDS Chapel 165 North 100 East, Alpine, Utah. Friends may visit with the family from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church prior to the services. Interment will be in the Orem City Cemetery.
