IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Quade Peterson
Hansen
December 11, 1934 – November 4, 2022
QUADE PETERSON HANSEN
1934–2022
On Friday, November 4, 2022, Quade Peterson Hansen, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, passed from this earth life quietly and peacefully in his Orem home. Quade loved the Lord, his family, and the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Quade was born on December 11, 1934, in a three-room clapboard house to his parents, Douglas Hansen and Alta Pearl Peterson Hansen. He had an older brother, Douglas DeVere, and two sisters, Tonja and Tamara.
Quade could fix anything or make anything. He enjoyed working with wood—making rocking horses for grandchildren and a sewing machine cabinet for his wife, LeaRae, to name just a few. When he could no longer use his power tools because of a heart condition, he began creating beautiful quilts. Quade and LeaRae enjoyed learning about new things as they traveled through the world.
His youth between the ages of six and eleven occurred during the Second World War. He remembered saving cans and tinfoil for the war effort. He went to school his first ten years at Iona in a small brick schoolhouse, which was only half a block from his home. He had good friends growing up. He believed these friendships helped keep him active in the church. His high school was small in number—he played six-man football. He played basketball on the high school team, mostly because he was tall, about six-foot-four, and he also "played" the trombone in the band. He claimed he was never very good. When he marched in the band, the "music" came from one or two good trumpet players, one or two clarinets, and the drums. The rest of them were "window dressing!"
It was during the summer of 1951 that he first met LeaRae. He was playing in the band at Ammon, and he looked at the audience and "saw the prettiest girl I had ever seen."
He attended Ricks College. When he ran out of gas money, his neighbor gave him a ride to school in the mornings. After school, he would get out on the road, put out his thumb, and wait for someone to pick him up. Rexburg is about thirty miles from his home in Iona, and sometimes in the winter he would have to walk the last two or three miles. After two years, he transferred to the University of Utah. Christmas Eve, 1954, he proposed to LeaRae. He finished the next semester at the end of May and married LeaRae on June 22, 1955.
After graduation, Quade was hired by Hughes Aircraft Company in Los Angeles. In the summer of 1958, he was transferred to McCord Field Air Force Base near Tacoma. As team leader, he helped train Air Force personnel on the maintenance of the F-102's weapon system. Wendy was born in December of 1958, and Janet came along one year and nine days later. After he received a master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Utah in the spring of 1962, they returned to Los Angeles, where he would again work for Hughes Aircraft Company. Brooks was born in the fall of 1963, and Steven arrived one year and three weeks later. During his career, he worked on the Lunar Landing Probe, the Phoenix Missile, and taught midshipmen at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Later in his career, he was involved in developing a new air-to-air missile that would replace the Sparrow missile. This missile would become the AMRAAM (Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile). According to Quade, "it was state of the art." He would eventually become the program manager for AMRAAM. He would complete his career with Hughes as a group vice president.
Quade was a faithful and devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Among his many callings, he served as a counselor and bishop of the Mar Vista II Ward in the Santa Monica Stake. After a work transfer to Tucson, Arizona, he and LeaRae were stake missionaries and served in a small branch on an Indian Reservation. From 1997 to 2000, they were called to preside over the Oklahoma Tulsa Mission. In March of 2001, he was called as a district president at the Missionary Training Center. In 2004, Quade and LeaRae served as missionaries in the Washington, D.C. North Mission. Following this last mission, he returned to the Missionary Training Center, where he served in four branch presidencies. He ended his service on this earth as a temple worker in the Provo Temple.
He is survived by his wife, LeaRae, of 67 years; his children Wendy Clark (David); Janet Mendenhall (Mark); Brooks Eddy (David); and Steven Hansen (Mary); 23 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. He was beloved by all who knew him. He truly was a disciple of Jesus Christ.
