Obituary

Our precious mother, grandmother, aunt and friend Rachel Calder Ashworth – she honored all three names - age 93, passed away peacefully Thursday, January 6, 2022, due to incidents of age. Rachel was born November 18, 1928 (same day as Mickey Mouse). She is a twin daughter born to loving parents, Leo and Lucile Hacking Calder in Vernal, Utah. Rachel and Lucy were born in Grandmother Hacking's home (Carrie Claire Stringham Hacking) in Maeser, Utah. Rachel describes being a twin: "We were such a wonderful part of each other's lives and no one else took that place: - not our husbands, not our children or other friends. It was a unique and bonded relation and so valuable to us both." Lucy unexpectedly passed away November 19, 2005, one day after their 77th birthday. Rachel has many vivid and cherished memories from living in the Ashley Valley with three sisters, four brothers, grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles and many friends. Rachel graduated in 1947 from Uintah High School where she was elected as student body Vice President. She attended Brigham Young University, University of Utah, and eventually in June 1964 graduated with a bachelor's degree from San Jose State University in Elementary Education while a mother of five children. Rachel married Clinton Paul Ashworth on October 9, 1950, in the Salt Lake City, Utah temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She is the mother to seven, grandmother to 18 and many great grandchildren. Their 58 years together found them living in Massachusetts; Schenectady, New York; San Jose, and Walnut Creek, California. They relocated and retired from Pacific Gas and Electric to Orem, Utah in 1993. They made many life-long friends in all the places they lived. She also wrote monthly emails in her later years to over one hundred immediate and extended family members, who appreciated her statements of encouragement and courage. Rachel was a devoted wife, loving mother/grandmother. She participated in many choirs and sang vocal solos for many community and church events for over 40 years. She served a Family History mission in Salt Lake City, Utah with her husband between 1996-97 and spent years researching family details, writing ancestorial histories and especially delighted in organizing family gatherings. She was a talented seamstress. She could make anything grow. Her flower gardens were extraordinary. She loved learning, reading and attending Book Club. She could whistle loud through her teeth. At age 70 she developed her talent for painting landscapes and cottages. She was unwavering in her testimony of Jesus Christ, her commitment in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was devoted in her many callings. Her wish is that her "posterity will love the gospel throughout their lives, support the freedom of this great land and always be cheerful." Survived by James (Alison) Ashworth of Boise, Idaho; Alan Ashworth and Paul Ashworth of Provo, Utah; and Jane (Paul) Rollins of Oviedo, Florida; sister Carrie (Duane) Kerr of Tremonton, Utah and many nieces and nephews. Proceeded in death by husband Clint, son Jeff, daughters Lucy Pugh and Sally Pierce, also her parents Leo and Lucile Hacking Calder and six siblings (Glen, Don, Lucy Woolley, Mary Alice Diehl, Joseph, and Fred). The family expresses appreciation to the Canyon View 10th ward for their love to Rachel and to the Legacy Village and Yarrow Hospice for their excellent care.
