Obituary

Ramona Morris 1927-2018 Our dear friend, aunt, and sister, Ramona Morris, passed away peacefully of Alzheimer's on Monday, November 5, 2018, having lived a wonderful, active, and giving life for 91 years. Born August 10, 1927 in Salt Lake City to Conway and Lydia Morris, Ramona was the second child in a family of two boys (Conway and David) and two girls (Audrian). Ramona attended Whittier Elementary, Glendale Jr. High, and South High School in Salt Lake City. She loved being outdoors and, as a teen, worked as a nanny for three summers for a family with a cabin by a lake in Yellowstone. Ramona's Dad took her to many places in Utah and built an ice skating rink in their own backyard. Ramona graduated from the University of Utah in 1949, majoring in psychology. When most sister missionaries could leave at age 29, Ramona was then called to serve in the Toronto, Canada mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at age 21. There she worked for two years in the mission office. After working for a few years at ZCMI, her life took off as she became a flight attendant for United Airlines. She was with United for 17 years, living at various times in San Francisco, Salt Lake City, New York City, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Honolulu. She was Assistant Chief of Stewardess Service in Salt Lake for three and a half years. Ramona worked as a passenger service agent while she attended graduate school at the U. of Utah, receiving her M.Ed. in Social Work. She then became a counselor and later, Director of the Counseling Center at Provo High School, where she retired in 1991. Ever energetic, Ramona continued to teach in the Human Technicians program at Utah State Hospital and was Counseling Director at Provo's Independence High School. For 20 years of her career, she was also an adjunct instructor in the Department of Social Work at BYU and worked as a liaison between BYU's School of Social Work and Provo School District, supervising interns placed within Provo's schools. With her friend, Beverley Nalder, she established an annual full-ride BYU scholarship at Provo High School for one young woman, to match another scholarship that had been available only to young men. In 2009, Ramona and Beverley were honored to receive the Brigham Young University President's Award for their work achievements and scholarship support to the university. A world traveler, Ramona was often described by her friends as a "walking dictionary." She traveled to many places in the U.S. as well as to Europe, Asia, North Africa, Scandinavia, South and Central America, Mexico, the Caribbean, the Middle East, the South Pacific, Canada, and even Antarctica. She and her friend, Beverley, did things that most tourists don't do, such as taking a tour of the sewers in Paris. In 1997 they spent a week on the Utah pioneer trail, traveling by handcart, wagon or walking from Scottsbluff, Nebraska to Laramie, Wyoming. Ramona served in all of her church's auxiliaries in both ward and stake positions. She taught Gospel Doctrine when she was seventeen and went on to teach that class for twenty years in various wards. Over many years, Ramona and Beverley served in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Missionary Training Center in Provo, advising and helping outbound missionaries. Ramona enjoyed many hobbies, including photography, music, reading, collecting coins and stamps, studying history, playing golf and tennis, snowmobiling, and four-wheeling. She and Beverley enjoyed being at their cabin in the Manti-LaSalle Mountains for over forty years during the spring, summer and fall. Ramona was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Audrian. She leaves behind her dear friend, Beverley, her brothers Conway Morris and David (Carol) Morris, her nieces and nephews and many dear friends. A funeral will be held in her honor on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 11:00 a.m., with a viewing before the funeral beginning at 9:30 a.m., at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at 225 E. 200 North, in Orem. Interment will be in the Orem City Cemetery. Beverley and family wish to thank Spring Gardens Memory Section caregivers and many others who cared for Ramona.
