Obituary

Reginald Thomas Fox, Jr., passed away Tuesday, August 7, 2018, at Spring Gardens Assisted Living Center, Lindon, Utah., at the age of 80. He was happily reunited with his wife of 58 years, Yoshiko Fox, who had passed away 3 ½ months earlier. He was also welcomed home by his parents, Reginald and Margaret Fox, his cousin, Alan Bernhardt, his granddaughter, Elizabeth Daniels Dunn, and many other friends, and family. Reg was born on June 11, 1938, to Margaret Pearl Hughes and Reginald Thomas Fox, in Brooklyn, N.Y. where he spent his childhood growing up in the Flatbush neighborhood. His father relocated the family to NC for two years to live with Reg's aunt. After his family returned to Brooklyn, he joined the Boy Scout Troop at St. Paul's Episcopal church, which ended up being a life changing decision for him. He spent every chance he could with his cousin, Alan, and the Scouts, taking subways, trains, and taxis to the Ramapo Mountains to camp and hike. He spent his summers working and serving at the Staten Island Scout Camp and loved the outdoors his entire life. When he was 17 he enlisted in the Air Force where he was sent to Naha Air Base in Okinawa, Japan. It was there he met and married his wife, Yoshiko Yamashiro, and had their first child, Jane. He served as a medical corpsman in the emergency room where he was introduced to the LDS church by a fellow serviceman. He was baptized in the East China Sea shortly before he left the Air Force to come home to Brooklyn with his new family. He took advantage of the GI Bill and his newfound religion and traveled by bus to attend BYU, in Provo, Utah, where their family grew with the birth of their son, Michael, in 1962. After his schooling they moved to Shelley, Idaho, where Reg worked as a professional Boy Scout Executive. Each summer he did what he loved most, and he and the family moved to Treasure Mountain BS camp in the Tetons. After a few years, he transferred with the Boy Scouts to Oak Lawn, IL, outside of Chicago, then he changed careers working in Training and Sales for CNA Insurance. After that he began a successful career with Research Institute of America, and Viacom, winning many awards and a few trips to the Bahamas. While in Chicago, he continued his love of the outdoors and would lead many trips with the Chicagoland Canoe Association. He was President and very involved in the Chicago Okinawan Club, along with serving in LDS Church Employment Services. When his mother became ill he retired and moved to New Smyrna Beach, Florida. After she passed away, he moved to Orem, and the Provo, Utah to be close to his children and grandchildren. He loved being a grandpa and taught his grandchildren and their friends to sail, canoe, hike, and spent many years at soccer games, swim meets, piano and violin recitals. He and Yoshiko loved to travel, and always seemed to find ways to serve where ever they went. His positive outlook on life will be remembered and he will be missed by many friends and family, including his children, Jane (Michael) Daniels; Michael (Rebecca) Fox; grandchildren, Jon (Tina) Daniels, Matt Dunn (Liz's husband), Joshua (Hannah) Daniels, Alicia (Mathew) Ellenberger, Rachel, and Jacob Daniels; four great grandchildren- Maxwell, Jocelyn, Zachary, and Russell Daniels. Funeral services will be held at Walker Sanderson Funeral home, 646 East 800 North, in Orem, UT, Saturday, August 18 th at 10 am, with a viewing from 9:00-9:45 am. Military honors will be performed by American Legion Post 72 immediately after the services. The family would like to thank all the Spring Gardens staff and A Plus Hospice for the loving care and support they gave to our parents and family.
