John Reid Giles, Jr. ("Reid"), 83, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, December 4, 2020, surrounded by members of his family in Birmingham, Alabama. Reid was the beloved husband of DeAnn Hickman Giles, father of seven children, Catherine Giles Pierce (Terry), John Reid Giles III (Kara), Julie Giles Parkes (Joseph), Robert Benjamin Giles (Stacey), Elizabeth Giles Carver (Scott), Deborah Giles Bethers (Daniel), and William Anthony Giles, and grandfather of 20 loving grandchildren. Born in Morganton, North Carolina on February 22, 1937 to John Reid and Catherine Sims Giles, he grew up in Renfroe, Alabama and was a graduate of Talladega High School. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now known as Auburn University, in Auburn, Alabama before attending Brigham Young University and earning an MBA. On June 1, 1965, Reid married his eternal companion, DeAnn Hickman, in the Salt Lake City Temple. He and DeAnn worked together in service to their church. Reid served in many positions in the church including District President, Stake President, Bishopric Counselor, Stake Presidency Counselor, High Councilor, Temple Presidency Counselor, Temple President, and Mission Presidency Counselor. In addition to his immediate family, Reid is survived by two sisters, Susan Huff (Don) and Sandra Roozen (Ken) and many loving cousins, nephews, nieces and other family members.
Our family would like to express our heartfelt appreciation for all of the correspondence, kind wishes and prayers given on his behalf. Thank you to all those on the medical team who worked with loving care and concern, and for the service and compassion of a wonderful ward and many great friends and family members.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, December 12, 2020, at Walker Sanderson Funeral Home (646 East 800 North Orem, Utah 84097) at 11 a.m. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, attendance will be by invitation only. On Saturday, December 19, 2020, a Drive-By Memorial Service will be held in his honor in Birmingham, Alabama at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel- 2768 Altadena Road from 1:00pm-3:00pm (CST). Both of these services will also be LIVE STREAMED. The Giles family expresses their love to each and every one and feels that all should be able to be there in person, but we regret to say the livestream will be the best possible way of being with them.
