Obituary

Richard Bruce Gilchrist 1932-2022 On March 4, 2022 Richard Bruce Gilchrist died at his home in Orem, Utah of natural causes. Bruce was born on October 10th, 1932 in Lehi, Utah to Richard and Stella Gilchrist. He grew up in Lehi as a child of the Great Depression and World War II. These events ended up shaping his life greatly. His father was a member of the Utah Army National Guard and was called up to serve during World War II when Bruce was nine years old. His interest in the military grew and led to his desire to also serve in the military. Bruce received an appointment to the Naval Academy and ended up graduating third in his class. He briefly served as a submarine officer before being chosen to attend MIT where he received his PhD in electrical engineering. Bruce served a distinguished career in research and development in the Navy for 26 years. He made significant contributions to the Navy's anti-submarine warfare program as well as served as Commanding Officer of the Naval Undersea Center in San Diego. Bruce married the love of his life Janice Chipman on December 20, 1955 in the LDS Manti temple. This day was even more special because his parents were also sealed that day and he was sealed to his parents. Because of his military service Bruce and Janice raised their seven children in many places including Hawaii, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maryland, San Diego, and Utah. After Bruce retired from the military they settled in Orem, Utah where he lived for 42 years. Bruce loved his family and believed they were exceptional. He loved to fish, play golf, and play with his grandchildren. Bruce was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings. He and Janice served three LOS missions as a senior couple to Detroit, San Diego and Honolulu. He was a proud member of Provo Rotary. After his wife Janice died Bruce consoled himself by taking annual trips to Alaska to go fishing with members of his family. He loved those trips! Bruce was preceded in death by his wife Janice and his parents. He is survived by his seven children Karen (Mark who died in 2017) Layton, Katie (Bob) Gilchrist, Richard (Gayla) Gilchrist, Geaniel Rowley, Laura (Chris) Gilchrist, Rebecca (Jared) Hall, Jennifer (Brandon) Grange and 25 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Dianne (Lee) Johnson and his brother Arnold (Kathy) Gilchrist.
