Richard Elliott Hawkins (Dick), age 92, passed peacefully from mortality on the evening of December 31, 2017, of causes incident to age. He was surrounded by family who are grateful for his reunion with loved ones who've gone before. Dick was born on June 23, 1925, in Edgemont, UT, the eldest of four children born to Ray O. and Montez Elliott Hawkins. Most of his growing up years were spent in Edgemont. He attended Page Elementary School in Provo, and Lincoln High School in Orem. As a boy, he participated in sports, theatre, and excelled in school. While in the ninth grade, Dick met a charming eighth grader, Elizabeth (Libby) Gordon in a school play - he as the villain and she as the fair maiden, and a beautiful courtship began. Frequent walks home and summers working together in the family fruit orchards sparked a life-long love that culminated in Dick and Libby marrying on Oct 20, 1945, in Cambridge, Mass. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. Dick and Libby are the parents of five children: Ronald (Anne) Hawkins, Highland, UT; Margo (Craig) Madsen, deceased; Kelly Hawkins, deceased; Jorja Ferguson, Oceanview, HI; and Robyn, who died in infancy. Libby preceded Dick in death, passing away on their 70th wedding anniversary, Oct 20, 2015. Following graduation from Lincoln High in 1943, Dick was accepted into the Navy V-12 officer training program, which sent him to the Universities of Idaho and Washington, and then to graduate school at Harvard University, where he was commissioned as a Naval Midshipman in Nov 1945. Following a Naval tour of duty in Hawaii, Dick returned to graduate in Accounting from BYU and he and Libby made their home in Orem. He became a CPA in 1952 and established a successful accounting firm, in which he practiced until retiring in 1988. Dick's incisive mind and professional skills served his many friends and clients throughout an outstanding career. Dick lived a full life! In addition to his career as a CPA, he was a founder and director of Wasatch Bank, a charter member and officer of the Orem and Timp Kiwanis clubs, and a founding member of Riverside Country Club, where he was twice elected as its President. He coached youth baseball teams in Orem for 18 years, spanning two generations, and served as a youth advisor in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved to ski, golf, complete cross-word puzzles and play bridge. Dick and Libby loved traveling together , visiting most of the U.S. as well as 48 countries throughout the world over a 42-year period. We will always cherish the numerous trips Dad and Mom shared with family members. They were so much fun! Dad's instructions of historical significance made traveling so enjoyable - he had an incredible memory and always shared interesting perspectives. Dick is survived by his siblings, Douglas (Colleen) Hawkins of Lehi, Sallee Worthen of Lehi, and Dorthy Goulding of Sierra Vista, AZ; two children, Ron and Jorja; 17 grandchildren; more than 40 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
