Obituary

Rivka Michelle Galbraith Van De Graaff, age 55, passed away after a valiant battle with cancer on July 17th, 2019. She was surrounded by her loving family members who'd all flown to Amsterdam to be by her side. Born in Provo, Utah in July of 1964, she was raised with four siblings in Jerusalem by her parents David Galbraith and Frieda (Krueger) Galbraith. No stranger to cancer, she battled the disease at 16 years old, and again at 34 years old, but did so with unwavering faith, zero self-pity, and absolute bravery. Rivka spent her life devoted to serving those within her community, the church, and family. Tirelessly staying involved in her children's schools and PTA programs, community emergency response team, family history, temple work, and church service. She could be described as her kids biggest fan, wringing her hands in the bleachers of a distant all-day volleyball tournament, cheering bundled under blankets and an umbrella along the sidelines of a soggy soccer game, watching with flowers in hand the third night of a mediocre theater performance; she was always there to support her kids and their hobbies and pursuits. Choosing to stay at home with her children, she encouraged, she chauffeured, she (begrudgingly) cooked, she served, she loved, always busy, her son joked that her early passing was likely one of the few times she was early to anything in her life. Rivka is survived by her husband of 35 years, James Van De Graaff, their three children, Danica, Nathan, and Stefan, and their spouses, and 8 grandchildren (with two more on the way). Rivka described those grandchildren as her "bucket list" as she spoke with her doctors, her reason for sticking around, her reason for fighting. She loved doing puzzles, and reading books, visiting museums, attending shows, and traveling with her grand-kids, and as a result, the kids have countless special memories of their time together. Other loving family members include her parents, David and Frieda, and her 4 siblings, Daniel, Joel, Naomi, and Tamara. A planner, a researcher, an adventure seeker, a traveler, an independent thinker, a reader, a weird-humored and foreign film lover, a new born baby snuggler, a napper, a roll your sleeves up and go to worker, a scarf wearer, a saver, a deal shopper, an example setter, an observer, a crusty bread lover, a fresh flower appreciater, a server, a listener, a spiritual prompting follower, a mother, a grandmother, a Savior Jesus Christ worshipper—she was many things, but perhaps most importantly she was a faithful fighter until the very end of her brief life. Funeral Services will be in Provo, Utah on Saturday July 27th with a visitation at 1 pm, and the funeral at 2pm at the Oak Hills Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1960 N 1500 E Provo. Interment will be in Provo City Cemetery, 610 South State Street, Provo. Condolences may be offered and memories shared with the family online at www.walkersanderson.com A memorial service will be held in Wilmette, Illinois the following week. Wednesday, July 31st at 7 pm at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2727 Lake Ave. Wilmette. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Latter-day Saint Charity
