Obituary

Robert Garratt Ogden was released from the limits of his mortal body on June 18th, 2022 at St. Mark's Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. He passed from this life peacefully after a week-long battle with injuries and complications from a motor vehicle accident.

Garratt was born on July 3rd, 1978 to Robert Edward and Diane Louder Ogden in Provo, Utah. He earned his Eagle Scout award at age 13, graduated from Orem High School in 1996 and worked in a variety of careers during his life, from construction to electrical work to surgical technology. From 2003-05, he served a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Winnipeg, Canada.

Garratt joined the Army National Guard's 116th Engineer Company in 2008 and received additional training in vertical construction, including plumbing and welding as well as a surgical technologist degree. His jack-of-all-trades skill set provided exceptional value to his unit. While deployed and working construction at small combat outposts in Afghanistan in 2012-13, Garratt's unit was under attack by enemy mortars multiple times. Nobody was injured, but the experience took a toll on Garratt's mental health and affected him for the rest of his life. In this way, he truly gave his life for his country. Garratt completed his Army service honorably in December 2013 and worked as a surgical technologist through the year 2021. Garratt's final months were selflessly dedicated to providing much needed 24-hour care for his grandmother Lynnea.

As an oldest child, Garratt was full of adventure and curiosity. He had an uncanny talent for convincing people to buy things. He sold "electric marbles" and shares of the family dog to his younger siblings and somehow got the other neighborhood children to pay admission to get into the back yard treehouse after renaming it "Tree Land." He retained his capacity to think outside the box and find honest ways to "work smarter, not harder" throughout his life.

Garratt's other hobbies focused on adventure. Certified as a SCUBA diver at age 14, he went on to dive in many exotic locations including Cozumel and Belize. He loved motorcycles from a young age, owning at least one motorcycle almost continuously from the time he turned 18. He also enjoyed snowboarding, rock climbing, pistol and long-range shooting, cars, music, and movies. Garratt was a trusted connoisseur of local restaurants wherever he lived. He himself was creative and talented in the kitchen, coming up with his own recipes and smoking meats to perfection.

Garratt's number one passion in his adult life was his nieces and nephews. He adored spending time with them at every opportunity and quickly rose to the undisputed status of "favorite uncle." His broad shoulders would reliably launch these children to new heights, as their favorite game was being repeatedly tossed into the air. His rough-and-tumble play would fill rooms with giggles and laughter and would be the highlight of all family reunions and other get-togethers. He was his nephews' and nieces' biggest fan and was there to support them in many of the performances, competitions and other special events in their lives. Garratt loved to make these surrogate children smile throughout the year with his time, attention and special gifts. Moms and dads couldn't hope to compete with presents from Uncle Garratt—bringing happiness and good memories was always more important to him than having extra money in the bank.

Garratt is preceded in death by his grandfather, Raymond Louder. He is survived by his parents; his grandparents Dorothy Louder, Rulon and Lynnea Ogden; his siblings, Julie (Matthew) Sanders, Wesley (Cami) Ogden, Rebecca (Brett) Okelberry and Jonathan (Karen) Ogden; and his nephews and nieces Dallin, Spencer, Henry, Clara and Lucy Sanders; James, Ava, Zachary, Lewis and Elizabeth Ogden; and Ember, Abby, Aaron, and Eli Okelberry, all of whom he loved as if they were his own children.

As his loving family, we attest that Garratt's existence has not come to an end with this early separation.

His spirit lives on, free from pain and the temporary limits of mortality, into the eternities with

unfathomable potential and endless joy.
