Obituary

Roger Carroll Flick (85) was born November 30, 1939 in Los Angeles, California to George August and Verna "Jean" Fawn Johnson. He was reared in southern California, mainly in San Fernando, and passed away at Timpanogos Regional Medical Center in Orem, Utah on Saturday February 22, 2025.

How do you pay tribute to someone who did so much?

As a boy, he excelled in scouting, winning a bugle when 100 boys competed for it. He loved scouting and became an Eagle Scout, also earning additional palms.

He was a talented trumpet player and played in many bands. Music was one of his loves, and he enjoyed sharing his bass voice.

In high school, he was on the track team and competed in running the hurdles and doing the long jump.

He loved The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and especially loved his Savior. He served a mission in the West Central States, and was called to be a missionary with the students when he returned to BYU.

While at BYU he fell in love with and married a student neighbor, Susan Hales. They graduated together in August of 1966. He and his wife served as senior missionary coordinators for over five years. He was privileged to serve in many church positions and especially loved his experiences serving on high councils and working with the elder's quorums and high priests. Serving with the BYU married students was a cherished experience.

As a student at BYU, he majored in math education and minored in physics and chemistry, also becoming accredited in genealogy and family history. After graduating from college, he taught math for four years and then was invited to join the BYU faculty to teach genealogy and family history classes. He earned a masters degree in library science and was asked to develop and oversee the BYU branch library, which he did for many years, organizing seminars and developing and teaching courses in genealogy and family history. He later served as the science librarian, the on-line information retrieval specialist (CARS librarian), and helped with cataloging library materials. He used his physics and chemistry backgrounds working for Atomics International in Canoga Park, California and testing tars at Geneva Steel in their chemistry lab.

Becoming an avid racquetball player, he and Sylvia Sawyer co-coached the BYU racquetball team for many years and led them to three national titles. He also competed with Sylvia in mixed doubles for forty years winning many trophies and medals. Roger instigated racquetball competition at the World Senior Games in St. George, competed in games there and was placed in the World Senior Games Hall of Fame. He also was placed in the Hall of Fame for the state of Utah and served as president of the Utah Racquetball Association. At the Orem Recreation Center, he taught racquetball and conducted a racquetball league for them, helping to organize many tournaments. It was a big part of his life and he loved the people who shared his passion for racquetball. He and Sylvia were instrumental in getting pickleball going in the Orem area.

He joined the Sons of Utah Pioneers and served more than once as the president of his chapter, later serving as the president of the national organization of SUP. He also served as the librarian of the library at their headquarters in Salt Lake.

He loved to teach and was an avid reader, being able to talk to people about almost any subject. Some of his hobbies were: gardening and landscaping, sketching and painting, beekeeping, biking, playing chess, and he was good at building things, doing plumbing and electrical work, mechanics, etc. There weren't many things he couldn't do.

Most of all, he loved his family and friends so much.

Roger is survived by his wife Susan (Sue), Steven Kent Flick (Trisha), Shelley Kay Schwenke (Paul), Wendy Sue Mitchell (Ron), Cheryl Stoner (Brendan) and Jonathan Hales Flick (Holli). He was blessed with 26 grandchildren (13 married), and almost 14 great grandchildren. A brother, George Buddy Flick (Siv), and a sister Patricia Childs.

He will truly be missed by many.
