IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Roy Lane
Kendall
February 26, 1934 – October 5, 2023
Our beloved father, Roy Lane Kendall, (89) graduated from this life on Thursday October 5, 2023, surrounded by his family at his home in Orem, Utah.
He was born to Mildred Lane Kendall and Norman Evans Kendall, February 26, 1934, in Fryeburg Maine. He was the fourth of six children born to his parents. As a boy, Roy loved his dogs. He also enjoyed raising chickens.
Roy moved to Salt Lake City in 1950 with his mother and siblings to be closer to the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He joined the military when he was 17. He spent the next 39 years in the Marines, Army, and Air Force. He achieved the rank of Senior Master Sargent.
Roy married Gayla Ann Sodersten in 1955. They were married for 23 years and had seven children. Later divorced.
He married Arlene Hillman Dye in 1995. He and Arlene enjoyed square dancing, camping with Good Sam's club, gardening, raising chickens, and his dogs. Roy and Arlene organized a TOPS, (taking off pounds sensibly), group that met in their home every week. Staying fit and exercising were always important to Roy. Roy and Arlene served two full-time missions, one in Spain, and then at Fort Campbell in Kentucky. They also served in the Provo Utah temple for two years.
Roy was hard working, fun loving, and an avid reader. He was very service oriented. One year he performed over one hundred military rights with 21-gun salutes at veteran's funerals and continued that service for many years. He was a true patriot.
Roy and his brothers, John and Bob started the Bear Lake Family Reunion in 1959, which has continued every year since. There are typically 200 to 300 relatives that gather for up to a week on the shores of Bear Lake every year. Roy and Arlene carried on the tradition of serving breakfast one morning, each year, to the whole camp. Roy, and his sons, built the first lifeguard tower in 1968, which they would put up and take down and haul home every year. The tower has been updated but the tradition lives on.
He enjoyed his family and children. He said his greatest accomplishment was his family.
In recent years he suffered through cancer and what he called TMB, too many birthdays. His trials brought him closer to the Lord and he valued his membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints very much.
He will be greatly missed by his wife of 28 years, Arlene Kendall. He is survived by his sister Meriel Howard, and his brother Bob Kendall (Darlene), and children, Cathy Harris (Robin), Patricia Christensen, Mike Kendall (Shelley), Lisa Kendall, Ken Kendall, (Melinda), Sagen Asplund (Rob), 27 grandchildren, and 56 great grandchildren. He is also survived by stepchildren Marty Dye (Carol), Jeff Dye, Greg Dye (Laura), Corey Dye (Nadine), Chris Dye (Brenda), 22 step grandchildren, and 53 great step grandchildren. He was preceded in death by daughter Elizabeth Kendall and grandson Benjamin Hoecherl, and stepson Gardell Dye.
