Obituary

Ruth Ivie Newell; daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend passed away May 8, 2018.  Ruth was born on the Provo Bench, Grandview area, on August 24, 1924 to James Arthur and Vidella Riding Ivie.  She was the first child of eight siblings who loved each other and shared close relationships throughout their lives.  Her smile warmed the heart of everyone who met her, and positive attitude never left her in spite of years of pain. Her legacy will be hard work: for over forty years she worked as a secretary at Geneva Steel.  She was also generous in giving away many masterfully crafted quilts and baby blankets she made with much timely detail and new skill she was always acquiring in the field.  She was a true artist with her hands.  Another treasure she leaves behind is a detailed journal encapsulating many years of her life. She married Daniel Eugene Newell on April 17, 1942 in Evanston, Wyoming.  The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake City Temple.  Ruth graduated from Lincoln High School in Orem, Utah. Dan and Ruth had two children: Alan and Danny. Mom was a very gifted woman who blessed the lives of so many with her handmade quilts and wall hangings.  She loved to shop, play bridge, quilt, go antique-hunting, and made many friendships doing so.  She was a great cook, kept a beautiful home and yard, loved going to St. George (in the winter) where she could stay busy quilting with her sister Glena, going for rides in Southern Utah with her faithful companion Le Grande Young, and slipping into Mesquite for a little bit of video poker. Ruth is survived by her one son, Alan (Colette) Newell; brothers and sisters Evelyn Obrian, Stewart (Pat) Ivie, Karleen Vidinhar, Carmen (Sue) Ivie, and Meriam (Phil) Jordon; sister-in-law, Shirley Ivie, and daughter-in-law Norma Newell.  Grandkids: Daniel (Diane) Newell, Sandra (Jon) Maxwell, and Carolyn Newell. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Dan Newell; brother Ray Ivie; son Daniel Jerald Newell, Sister, Glena Carlson, and granddaughter Sue Ann Ruth Newell. We would like to send out a heartfelt message of gratitude to all our friends and family for your tender loving support; we feed on your love in this shifting time.  Two more banners of thanks go out to Horizon Home Health and Summerfield Retirement for the gentle, directed, consistent care Ruth received most recently. Funeral Services will be Wednesday, May 17, 2018, 11:00 a.m. in the Sharon Park 2nd Ward, 225 East 200 North, Orem. Family and friends may visit Tuesday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, 646 East 800 North, Orem, or Wednesday morning at the church from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in Orem City Cemetery.
