Obituary

Sarah Adelicia Orton Baird, 94, passed away November 19, 2020 in Provo, Utah, surrounded by family. Sarah was born in Widtsoe, Garfield County, Utah to Grover Cleveland and Clara Beebe Orton, February 22, 1926. Sarah was pleased to share her birthday with George Washington and her grandmother, Sarah Dalley Orton, for whom she was named. Sarah was raised in a loving, happy family that worked together and sang songs to make work happy. Of thirteen siblings Sarah was the last remaining living child. Sarah attended Lehi High School until her senior year, when she moved to Payson due to family circumstances during World War II. She graduated from Payson High School. She met her sweetheart, Frederick T. Baird, in Payson. They were married December 19, 1944 in the Salt Lake Temple during a short military leave for Fred. Three days after their wedding, Fred received a wire telling him that his furlough was canceled and to report to duty immediately. Fred and Sarah began their family in Payson and moved to Orem a few years later, where their children all attended school. Sarah's greatest joy was being a mother to her children. She was blessed as each child came. She felt that each brought so much love to their home. Her posterity shall rise up and call her blessed. Sarah and her husband Fred had nine children: Dennis (Christine), Vickie, Lonnie (Julie), Scott (Bonnie), Jill (Arthur Allen), Jackie (Mark Standing), Chad (Cathy), Kimberli (Brian Westover), Daren (Camille). She is preceded in death by her husband, Fred and three children: Lonnie, Vickie, Dennis and her daughter in law, Christine. They currently have 40 grandchildren and 101 great grandchildren. Sarah loved the Lord and was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served as a ward Primary president, Young Women President, Relief Society President and in all three stake auxiliary presidencies. She loved serving with her husband as he was called to be bishop of a ward of young single adults. Sarah served two missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with her husband, the Oregon-Portland Mission and the Mississippi-Jackson Mission. To date, forty-seven members of their direct posterity have also served missions. In their home, above a shelf filled with photographs of Sarah and Fred's grandchildren hung a sign that summed it up perfectly, "All because two people fell in love." After their first mission, Sarah and Fred moved to Provo where they served together in the Provo Temple for many years. Before Fred's passing in 2017, they marked their 73rd wedding anniversary. Sarah was an active neighbor and friend and loved her associations with others. She enjoyed participating with a Brigham Young University women's bowling league and a social enrichment ladies club, Paideia Sorosis, which focused on a well-rounded cultural education. Sarah had the best answer when asked how she was doing, "I'm trying to be good!" Each morning when she awoke, she prayed to know who she could help that day. She usually had her answer and accomplished the task by nightfall. She could be found giving a ride to a stranger on a rainy day, paying for other's food in line at the store, being a friend to someone with special needs or taking a loaf of bread to lighten a heart. Sarah opened her heart and home to many and changed lives for the better.
