Obituary

Scott Allan Bringhurst, 50, of Springville, passed away on November 17, 2021 due to complications from surgery.

Scott was born on April 7, 1971 in Payson Utah to Allan and Diane Bringhurst. He was the first grandchild of Bob and Helen Bringhurst of Springville and Dorothy and Leonard Dean Johnson of Spanish Fork.

At six years old Scott's family moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho where he lived for the remainder of his formative years. Scott attended Bonneville High School and graduated in 1989. In High School, one of his most prolific talents was seeded and quickly blossomed. Scott was a gifted linguist- he was able to learn multiple languages very quickly and become fluent in many. This gift enabled him to find a sense of belonging among many of his school's foreign exchange students and would serve him well for the remainder of his life. Shortly after graduation, Scott followed in his father and grandfather's footsteps and joined the Idaho National Guard.

Scott briefly attended Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho before transitioning to full time military service in the Army. He began his military career as a career counselor, and later served as an Army Transport Operator. Scott served honorably in the Army for 13 years. During that time, he served in Egypt, Guantanamo Bay, and Iraq. He earned many ribbons, medals, and awards. He traveled the world and made many friends while in the military. Scott was proud to be a soldier, and his family and friends were honored by his service.

While Scott was serving in the Army, he married Marie Lourdes (Tania) Mastroti. They were later divorced.

Scott was a father to three wonderful sons: Austin, Pierce, and Brendon. All three have grown into fine young men that Scott was immensely proud of. They too have followed in their father's footsteps by joining the military and serving honorably. Scott's family is grateful for their service and also proud of the men they are today.

Following Scott's military service, he worked for Fisher Price in East Aurora, NY. His creativity, love of languages and world cultures served him well as he designed toys for market segments all over the world.

The next few years of Scott's life were profoundly transformative, and even painful as he found the courage to live his authentic life. Although his coming out story was harrowing and painful, Scott persevered and was led to unite with the love of his life, Shawn Hopes. Scott and Shawn were married on November 30, 2018.

As Scott and Shawn built their life together, they enjoyed a common love for travel. Visiting multiple countries, learning about new cultures and experiences together became a passion of theirs, and Shawn will continue to travel and explore, taking a part of Scott with him always.

Scott was one of the most talented men that most of us were privileged to know. He excelled at almost everything he tried and had a passion and zest for life. His gardening skills and enthusiasm for plants was legendary. It was not uncommon for him to send a carefully curated plant selection with detailed instructions to his loved ones.

Above all that Scott was, his proudest accomplishment was becoming a Nurse Practitioner. Scott knew what it meant to feel real pain, and that empathy translated to the care he extended to his patients. He did not have enough time in this life to heal all those who would have benefitted from his compassion and intellect, and he was indeed a true healer. He cared deeply about everyone, but especially the youth in the LGBTQ community, and he was proud to be a medical provider and advocate for them.

Some people can live their whole lives and be content with staying the same. But not Scott. He was a perpetual learner and student of the world. He was creative, funny, wildly inappropriate at times, and a prankster like no other. Perhaps his greatest talent and one that he will long be remembered for is his ability to love. To know Scott was to be loved by him, and he never loved small. He only knew big love, with that big, beautiful smile and those amazing blue eyes he was loved in return by many. We love him. And will miss him terribly.

Scott is preceded in death by his Grandparents Robert and Helen Bringhurst, Leonard Dean and Dorothy Johnson, and his brother-in-law Jeffrey Felde. He is survived by his loving husband Shawn Hopes of Springville Utah, his children Austin, Pierce, and Brendon, his parents Allan and Diane Bringhurst of Idaho Falls, Idaho; his in laws Don and Debbie Hopes of Goshen, Utah, his Sister Stacy (Sonny) Burgie of Rigby, Idaho, his Brother Alex (Corrie Holmes) Bringhurst of Pocatello, Idaho, his sister Mindy (Robert) Markley of Littleton, Colorado, his sister Kim (the late Jeffrey) Felde of Pocatello, Idaho, sister in law Toni Hopes of Spanish Fork Utah, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and his very spoiled mini schnauzer, Maxwell.

In accordance with Scott's wishes, the immediate family will be meeting for an intimate gathering where Scott will be honored with military rites at Walker Sanderson Funeral Home in Provo, Utah. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
