Shannon Louise Hepworth Gowans passed away Sunday, April 14 th at her home at the age of 84, surrounded by her loving family. She was born October 12, 1934 in Brigham City, Utah to George William and Phyllis Smurthwaite Hepworth. Shannon was raised in Star Valley, Wyoming, and although she eventually left, she always had a special place in her heart for Star Valley. After graduating from Star Valley High, she attended BYU where she met her eternal companion, Floyd Hill Gowans and they were married June 9, 1953 in the Salt Lake Temple.
Shannon is survived by her husband Floyd, 7 children, Floyd (Karen), Robert (Sharon), Carol (Bernie) Messina, Eileen (Sean) Healy, James (Vickie), Joseph (Sarah), Michael (Jean), 34 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren and her brothers, Gradon and David Hepworth. She made each one of them feel special and loved, and spent her life devoted to their care and happiness. She taught them to follow Jesus Christ through her example of loyalty and service to her Heavenly Father.
Shannon was a very active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, having served in many leadership positions including Primary President and Relief Society President on two occasions. She served two missions with her husband Floyd to Auckland, New Zealand and Santa Rosa, California where Floyd served as the Mission President. She extended the same love and devotion to all her missionaries as she did to her own children.
Shannon was preceded in death by her parents and her precious daughter and granddaughter, Susan and Rachel. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 20, 2019 at 12:00 PM in the Steeple Chase Chapel, 1780 N. 165 E. Orem, Utah with a viewing from 10:45 to 11:45 that morning. There will also be a viewing Friday evening April 19 th from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM at the same location.
