Obituary

Shirley Ann Ford Brereton passed away in her Orem home surrounded by her loving family on February 23, 2024 of liver cancer. Her greatest love was her family. She was happiest when she was surrounded by them, especially her grandchildren. She was so very proud of all of them. Shirley was full of love, she never knew a stranger. She married the love of her life Ronald Brereton on March 29th 1974, later they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple for time and all eternity. She was looking forward to celebrating 50 years of marriage this year. Together they raised a beautiful family. Whenever her family came to her for advice she would smile and say, "We do all that we can, and then that's it, Heavenly Father will take care of the rest." These were words that she lived by.

Shirley was born June 5, 1944 to Joseph and Elvira Ford in Layton, Utah. She was a beautiful baby with lots of curly hair. When she was 4 years old her family moved to their home in Orem Utah where she spent the rest of her childhood years. Shirley had an amazing childhood. She told many stories of parties, dances, school activities, and friends, but the love that her family shared was at the heart of all the stories she told. She loved to share memories of floating down the canal to her grandma and grandpa Ford's house. She said that every time she came to a bridge she would get out, walk around it, and get back in. She was afraid of running into spiders! She also loved spending time with her sister Jane no matter what they were doing, from making candy, shopping, going out to lunch, and even cleaning, there was always love and laughter. Shirley had a contagious laugh, you couldn't help but laugh along with her. She could light up any room with her smile.

When Shirley was 16 years old she began her adventure in dentistry as a dental assistant. Shirley also worked a part time job at the City Cafe two nights a week. This is where she met her husband Ron. After their wedding they moved into their home in Orem.

She had a great love for her extended family. One of her favorite events was camping at the annual Ford family reunion. She loved to be able to spend time surrounded by her extended family, and she knew them all by name!

Shirley lived a life of service. She was always serving her friends and neighbors. She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. During her life she has served the church in many callings in the Primary, Relief Society, and Young Womens. Her final calling, serving in the branch at Summerfield Manor, held a special place in her heart.

Shirley loved being a wife and mother. She is survived by her husband, Ronald Hansen Brereton; children, Rebecca Taylor (Clayton), Amy Anderson (Travis), 6 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild on the way; step-children, Joni Sayers (John), JaLyn Ward (Roger), 9 step-grandchildren, and 17 step-great-grandchildren; brother, Bill Ford (Cindy), sister-in-laws, Gloria Ford and Elaine Ford; and many special nieces and nephews who she greatly loved. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Elvira Ford; brothers, Joseph Ford and Jim Ford; sister, Carolyn Jane Robertson (Don); step- children, Jeff Brereton and Jill Mihlberger; step-grandchildren, Mckenna Helm and Landon Sayers.
