Obituary

Sondra Laurel (Harmon) Buckwalter, 85, beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, completed her mortal journey November 18, 2023, surrounded in love with family at her side.

She was born July 19, 1938, in Price, Utah, as the third child to Brigham Franklin Harmon and Eveline Jane Holden. She was a graduate of Carbon High School, completing an Associate Degree in Education from Carbon College, and a Bachelor of Education from Brigham Young University. She taught 2nd grade at Park Elementary school in Spanish Fork, Utah.

On July 20, 1962, Sondra married Doyle Wild Buckwalter in the Manti, Utah Temple. While Doyle was in graduate school she supported their family through her teaching. Later, as children were born, she was a stay-at-home mom and continued to help support the family by typing student papers, dissertations, and theses.

Sondra found great joy in being a wife and mother. She was a wonderful homemaker and household manager. She was loving, accepting, and unselfishly devoted to our family's care; helping teach us the gospel, assisting with schoolwork and projects, providing opportunities to develop talents, attending countless performances, practices, and games to support our interests. She is the glue that holds our family together and her love will continue to be our stability.

Mom was a great example to us of hard work, resourcefulness, and creativity. She had a great sense of humor and a twinkle in her eye. She was unafraid to try new things in technology, and in hobbies, and encouraged us to try new things as well. Sonnie's many interests strengthened the family and benefited our lives. She managed the family rental properties. She was a 4-H leader, teaching us cooking, sewing, and homemaking skills. Each Christmas she would make dozens and dozens of nut logs to treat neighbors, friends, and family. She invented and marketed the "Brace Your Back" back support. She was always active in projects to help us children earn money. Together we made funnel cakes, homemade bread, cinnamon rolls, and chocolate truffle Easter eggs. She had a love for genealogy and ran Family Scanner, a photo scanning business for compiling family histories. She enjoyed gardening and preserving food, and was accomplished at sewing, quilting, and cross-stitch.

Sondra was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She loved attending the temple and held her covenants dear. She served in leadership roles in the Relief Society, Young Women, and Primary organizations on the ward and stake levels. She enjoyed serving together with her husband as Stake Patriarch Scribe.

From 2008-2010, Sonnie and Doyle were thrilled to share the lessons and blessings of the restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ while serving for 18 months in the Historic Kirtland Visitor Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Phillip Terry Harmon, Don Michael Harmon, and sisters, Barbara Frances Harmon, and Linda Loise Martin.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Doyle, her children: Kristen (Ron) Bartholomew of Orem, UT, Beth (David) Schulte of Kokomo, IN, Wayne (Becky) Buckwalter of Orem, UT, Neal (Lynnette) Buckwalter of Grand Rapids, MI, as well as 18 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren.
