IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Spencer Matthew
Gourley
November 16, 1981 – March 17, 2022
Spencer Matthew Gourley's life was one of strength, strength of body, and incredible strength of will. An adventurous spirit with a pressing drive and determination which forced him to seek adventure. He knew the world held it for him! His spirit drove him to find it and he followed; therefore, his life was full.
Spencer was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on November 16, 1981 to Elene Simonson Gourley and George Carlyle Gourley Jr. He graduated from Timpview High School in 2000 where he excelled in football, baseball, wrestling and sang in the acapella choir. He loved making friends and organizing "creative" activities. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout with a record number of merit badges. Spencer served an LDS mission in Vladivostok Russia (Magadan) from 2000 to 2002. This experience was very special to him throughout his life and to the many people he served. Spencer attended Utah Valley University where he pursued degrees in Criminal Justice and Education. He also completed numerous international English teaching certificates. Spencer was a true patriot and fought for freedom entering the Army in 2004. He completed two tours of duty for "Operation Iraqi Freedom". He received many decorations, medals, and campaign ribbons, which he privately honored. After the Army, Spencer traveled the world to eighteen countries teaching English as a second language. His life was highlighted by a firm dedication to his principles and loyalty to friends and family. He had a deep commitment to serving those around him and a curiosity that drove him to find new ways to improve the lives of others. Spencer settled in Lambayeque, Peru in January 2017 where he founded the "Academy of English" with his sweetheart Cinthia Noemi Santos Mires. The school continues his legacy of care and education for the people of Lambayeque.
Spencer passed away on March 17, 2022 due to the progression of Myotonic Dystrophy which causes the atrophy of muscles and organs. His strength and determination allowed him to accomplish his life's purpose in spite of the significant challenges presented to him. He is survived by his parents Elene Simonson Gourley and George Carlyle Gourley (Cindy Lampropoulos), Grandmother LaRae Gourley, his siblings: Nicole Gourley Broderick (Michael), George Gourley (Laura Hobbs), Benjamin John Gourley, Taylor Russell Gourley (Sara Bousiali), Jaclyn Gourley Webb (Phil), Natalie Gourley Harper (Sterling), and his dog Jack.
