Obituary

Stefanie Jo Slade, age 47 of Salt Lake City, passed away Monday February 10, 2020. Stefanie Slade had beautifully clear alabaster skin and blue eyes that could make a clear sky tear up and weep with jealousy. She loved hot springs, cold mountain lakes, the wind blowing through long grass and deep musty caves and caverns. She loved her family with a terrible ferociousness and her love of her mom Iris and her dad Keith was truly the stuff of legends. She was the seventh of ten children and Seven was one of her many names. Stefanie was a dancer, she spoke the language of movement as her mother tongue. Spoken language could elude her at times but the fluency of her body easily expressed nuance that no mere words could ever capture. She was of movement; graceful, clumsy and everything in between. Her feet bore the marks of thousands upon thousands of hours of dance. Her toes were splayed wide and her feet resented being inside shoes unless those shoes were fabulous. She taught movement to deaf and blind children (and so many others) to help them encounter the world more fearlessly. Stefanie loved the theater. As a girl, she fell in love with the Muppet Show and somehow she ended up working there, ultimately as the Production Manager and fearless leader of the Rose Wagner Center for the Performing Arts. She loved sitting in a silent, dark and empty theater perfecting her magic as a sought-after lighting designer. She was the vigilant champion of underrepresented voices in our community and found endless ways of building the theaters that others could use to speak their truth and make their dreams come true. Stefanie was a vastly talented choreographer whose work always seemed to evoke tears of beauty and astonished awe. She was a certified death midwife and a passionate advocate of green burial. She loved and protected bodies and flesh in a way that inspired wonder and insight in all those she met. Stefanie suffered terrible wounds in her childhood and adolescence that continued to torment her throughout her life. Most never knew anything about that as she hated to be seen in those terms and never wanted to be a burden to anyone. She had a magical way of showing up for people and of seeing their unspoken inner struggles. Her insight into the human heart was supernatural. She lived and spoke from her vast and immense heart. Her tiny hands were always willing to help carry your burden and soothe your troubled brow. Her generous heart always had time for you and she was genuinely curious about what you were saying. She loved cats and garden tomatoes and objects of exquisite beauty, the tinier the better. She loved art, music, beautiful clothes, grilled cheese sandwiches with green chiles, red wine and good whiskey. Stefanie Slade had style, a style that was often imitated but was truly her own. She loved laughing with good friends, a warm hearth, shared stories, and roses in her tea. She touched the lives of everyone she encountered. She had a magical way of making you feel seen and heard. She moved through this life as a force of nature. But as anyone who knew her knows, all of these words are just a rock skipping across a pond. She touched our lives in a way few ever can or will and in her absence, both our lives and the world are a poorer place. We will miss her immensely and be inspired by her forever. She is survived by her brothers and sisters, Greg Slade (Sophie), Claudia Brown, Brad Slade (Carolyn), John Slade (Stefanie), Rod Slade (Marilee), Kim Ellison (Scott), Matt Slade (Jonna), Heather Slade & Jeremy Slade (Wanrudee) and many, many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. She is also survived by her husband Mattson McFarland, his parents Jim & Deb McFarland and his brothers Jess (Paty), Marshall (Stephanie) Josh Wolfe (Suzanne) and Dan (Ally) and nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her deeply beloved parents J. Keith and Iris Slade and her brother in law Zach McFarland and her nephew Kevin Slade (John and Stephanie).
