IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Susan
Stone
September 14, 1948 – June 15, 2024
Susan Stone was born September 14, 1948 in Provo, Utah to Richard Sawley and Nadine Adamson Stone. Her father worked as an executive at Geneva Steel and her mother raised Susan and her two older brothers a block away from Timpanogos Elementary where she attended school. From the very beginning Susan loved school and was a self described over achiever. Her family moved to Orem in the early 60's and she enjoyed attending Lincoln Jr High where she was on the Student Council and Orem High where she was in Tigerettes and the band and orchestra. She continued to excel in school and was named Sterling Scholar and was a delegate at Girl's State.
She attended BYU where she completed a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and Master's Degree in Curriculum Development. As part of her BYU experience, she spent a semester abroad in Salzburg, Austria where she developed a lifelong passion for travel. She has traveled on every continent since, throughout Europe, Asia, South and Central America, Australia, and the Middle East. She remembers going to Disneyland during its opening when she was just 7. That initiated a love of all things Disney. For nearly 35 years she went to Walt Disney World in Florida every year.
Susan started her career in education as a 4th grade teacher at Central Elementary in Pleasant Grove. She quickly became President of the Teacher's Association in Alpine School District, propelling her into administration. She earned a doctor's degree from BYU in Educational Leadership. She served as the Director of Community and Adult Education and as an Elementary Principal at Barratt Elementary in American Fork and Bonneville Elementary in Orem. She then served as an Assistant Superintendent over Human Resources for 14 years. She retired from Alpine School District after 31 years of service. She continued working in education for 14 more years as a student teacher supervisor, a private school administrator, and a college professor. Her favorite was teaching BYU graduate students in human resources.
She was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many capacities teaching and in presidencies of the Relief Society and Young Women. Most recently she served as a temple ordinance worker and coordinator, first at Mt. Timpanogos Temple and then at the Provo Temple.
Susan loved being active and involved. She began playing the flute in her early elementary years. Sixty years later she still loved playing and was a featured soloist and accompanist with the Chauntenettes Women's Choir in Orem and with her ward choir. She sang with Chauntenettes for 25 years, also serving as President and Secretary. She loved organizing tours for the choir which celebrated her love of travel, planning and organizing, and singing. She loved book clubs and card parties and family dinners for every holiday.
Everyone who knows Susan knows she loves animals, especially dogs. While in Austria, she fell in love with dachshunds. Since moving into her house in 1986 she was never without two dachshunds to keep things interesting.
She is survived by her two older brothers, Dr. Richard Stone (Faunice) and Robert Stone, and her nieces Michelle (Vince) Shrader. Lisa (Chipman) Packer, and her nephew, Richie Stone.
