Ted Eugene Ridenhour passed away peacefully on August 29, 2017, after 86 years of loving service to his family, church, and community. Ted was born on November 30, 1930, to Ralph Lynn and Mary Nina (Spears) Ridenhour in a small rural community near Mount Pleasant, North Carolina. He attended Mt. Pleasant High School and earned an Associates Degree from Pfeiffer Junior College. In 1951, Ted joined the U.S. Navy and served as a dental technician during the Korean War. One of the most pivotal developments of Ted's life occurred toward the end of his military service when he converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1955. Ted's conversion led him to Utah and enrollment in Brigham Young University where he began his study of English Literature and met his future wife of 57 years, Sherry Shipp. Ted received his BA and MA from BYU in 1959 and 1961 respectively, where he immediately secured a faculty position in the English Department. Another momentous development occurred during this time: Ted and Sherry were married in the Manti LDS Temple on July 8, 1960. Ted took a leave from teaching in 1963 to pursue more graduate work at Indiana University. He returned to BYU in 1966 where he taught a number of writing and literature courses, with a particular emphasis on English Masterpieces and Shakespeare until his retirement in 1993. Ted considered it a privilege and special calling to teach at BYU and be a part of its community. Deeply committed to the Mormon faith, Ted served in various callings including High Priest Group Leader, Bishopric Counselor, and several teaching positions. Ted lived the principles of his religion daily and was especially dedicated to helping others in need. In his later years, Ted's love of literature, music, nature, and religious philosophy sustained him and filled his days. To the end, he remained a scholar and lover of learning. Ted is survived by his wife Sherilyn (Shipp) Ridenhour and his six children: Doug (Maureen) Ridenhour, Deborah (Joseph) Marrott, Jennifer (Jay) Levitt, Liza (Morri) Tolman, Melissa Crandall, and Mary (Jeffery) Gertino and his sisters: Jane Barrier, Dorothy (Whitaker) Moose, and Barbara (Donald) Fisher. The delights of his life were his eleven grandchildren: Tyler, Zachary, Kylea, Gabrielle, Carter, Alex, Addison, Tuscan, Chloe, Sofia, and Jude. Ted was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Thomas Ridenhour, and his brother-in-law, Marvin Barrier. Ted's family is grateful for the compassionate care given him by Stonehenge of Orem, Legacy Village of Provo, Canyon Home Care & Hospice, Brighton Home Health & Hospice, and Senior Partners Utah. Memorial services will be held on Thursday, September 7, at 11am at the Orem Fifth Ward Chapel, 50 South 800 East, Orem, UT 84097. Friends may call on Wednesday evening between 6-8pm at Walker Sanderson Mortuary, 646 East 800 North in Orem, and on Thursday one hour before the memorial service at the chapel. Burial will be at the Orem City Cemetery following the services. Condolences may be offered to the family online at WalkerSanderson.com.
