Obituary

Van Brent Benson of Benjamin, Utah passed away peacefully with his beloved wife by his side on the morning of Sunday 25 June 2017. Brent was born on 7 November 1940 in Spring City, Utah to Jack Ernest and Melba Justesen Benson. In his youth, Brent enjoyed playing sports and going on adventures with his friends and brothers, Bryan and Phil. Brent was a gifted student and deeply valued the lifelong pursuit of knowledge and learning. He graduated from Carbon High School before enjoying many future academic successes while attending The University of Utah, an institution which he ardently and proudly supported for the rest of his life. At the conclusion of high school, Brent enlisted in the United States Navy where he served honorably. During his Naval service he worked in the nuclear weapons program and travelled all over the world playing basketball as a member of his naval base's basketball team. During a one month shore leave, Brent returned to Sunnyside, Utah where he married his high school sweetheart, Connie Grautell Staley, on 16 July 1960, a marriage that was sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. Brent was an adept entrepreneur and started several successful businesses over the years. Brent's exemplification of hard work, empathy, and resilience in everything he did made him a community role model and cherished friend wherever he went. A man of steadfast faith and unshakable dedication, Brent also served in many rewarding callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout his life, including as a High Priest, a Gospel Doctrine instructor, a BYU YSA Stake High Councilman, and a Provo Temple Ordinance Worker. Brent was a man adored by many, in no small part thanks to the intensity and sincerity with which he unconditionally loved and selflessly served everyone around him. Of his many accomplishments, Brent's crowning achievement and greatest source of joy was raising a family of five children, thirteen grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and being a loving and involved grandfather in each of their lives. Trips to the family cabin that he built with his father in The High Uinta mountains, riding around on ATVs and snowmobiles, hunting and fishing trips, and being in attendance at his family's sporting events and artistic performances, were just some of his favorite ways to spend quality time with those he loved. Brent is preceded in death by his parents Jack Ernest and Melba Justesen Benson, brother Bryan, sister Bonnie, and son Ryan. Brent is survived by his wife Connie, daughters Kellie Bray (Keith) and Beckie Hawkins (Rick), sons Todd (Amberlie) and Jack Paul, his sister Denise Kirk(Leonard) and brother Phil Benson (Ruth), thirteen grandchildren, six great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and countless friends and colleagues who loved and will miss him dearly. Brent's viewing will be held on Wednesday, 28 June 2017, at the Benjamin 1st Ward, 3278 West 7300 South, Benjamin, Utah from 6:00-8:00PM and the again the following morning from 9:30-10:45 AM prior to the funeral services. Funeral services will be held, Thursday 29 June 2017, at 11:00AM in the Benjamin 1st Ward chapel, following which, Brent will be laid to rest in the Spanish Fork Cemetery with Military Honors.
