Obituary

Vaughn Lawrence Dearden Having completed his final merit badge, Vaughn Lawrence Dearden grabbed his tool box and went to meet his beloved eternal companion, Afton Marjorie Brown Dearden on November 20, 2017. Vaughn was born in Henefer, Utah on July 10, 1930, to John Hennefer and Ellen Louise Lottier Dearden. At North Summit High School, he played football and was active in Future Farmers of America. Lined up according to height, he and Afton were partners for the Junior Promenade. This was the beginning of a high school romance that continued after they graduated in 1948. On July 26, 1951, they married in the Logan LDS Temple. By the time he was 28 years old, he had turned a garage into their first home, helped build his parent's home, worked as a foreman on the Henefer Church and built a new house for his growing family in Hoytsville, Utah. He worked on his father's and Afton's father's farms. Some of the other jobs he had were at the Ideal Cement Company at Devil's Slide, Brown Equipment installing milk tanks and for a survey company building a bridge in Echo Canyon. He began working in the Technology Department at Brigham Young University in 1966. In that department, he kept the machines working and taught labs. Some of his happiest memories were working with the students. He retired after nearly 30 years at BYU. He loved working with the Boy Scouts and helping them achieve the rank of Eagle. After over 40 years of service, he received one of Scouting's highest awards when he was presented the Silver Beaver award in 2001. Vaughn's life was filled with service to family, neighbors and church. Vaughn was able to fix anything and willingly came to the aid of those around him. He served faithfully in numerous callings in his LDS wards throughout his life, including working at both the Provo and Mount Timpanogos Temples. Through his righteous example, his children and grandchildren learned gospel truths, how to work and play hard, give service to others, optimism and time management as well as build and repair things. He loved to travel and instilled in us a desire to see the world. Vaughn will be greatly missed by his sister, Joye Ovard, his five children and their spouses, Vickie and Steve Jaussi; Jennie and Larry Reynolds; Sherrie and Cameron Nish; Roma and Brent Lambson; and Mike and Melony Huff Dearden, 18 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren, as well as nephews and nieces. He was greeted in heaven by his loving wife, his parents, two grandchildren, a great-granddaughter, a foster son and countless others who welcomed him with smiles and open arms. The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to the remarkable employees at both Summerfield Retirement and Envision Home Health and Hospice, especially Nate Mansanarez, for all their loving care given to Dad. Always professional and attentive, you all made the final months of Dad's life enjoyable. Services will be held Tuesday, November 28 at 11:00 a.m. in the Orem Sharon Stake Center, 545 South 800 East. Friends may call at the Walker Sanderson Funeral Home 646 East 800 North Orem, Monday, November 27, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday at the Stake Center from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Orem City Cemetery.
