Vilo Pratt Gill
Vilo Pratt Gill passed away the evening of September 5, 2021, after a long illness. She was at home surrounded by family. She was born June 19, 1932, in El Paso, Texas, to Joseph Wilcken Pratt and Vilo Williams. She was the second of a family of seven children. Her first years were spent in Mexico. She lived in Pecos, Texas, for many years (and played oboe in the marching band). The family moved to Blackfoot, Idaho, in her senior year of high school. She received a bachelor's degree at Idaho State in Pocatello, Idaho, in elementary education. She served a mission in Mexico and returned to teach in Arizona. She moved to Provo, Utah, to pursue a master's degree and met the "tall, dark, handsome" Gurcharan Singh Gill. He called her his "Yellow Rose of Texas." They married June 10, 1958, in Mesa, Arizona.
Vilo Gill approached her child-raising years with the same professionalism, creativity and sense of adventure she'd used as a teacher. She loved to read and volunteered at the Provo Library. She enjoyed a sabbatical in Scotland and trips to Japan, England and India. She was the kind of neighbor who is a quiet and diligent friend. She spent hours in family history work. She served in many capacities in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including Primary teacher, Relief Society President, Cub Scout leader, and with her husband in the mission presidency of the first India Mission from January 1993 through July 1995.
She is survived by her husband, Gurcharan Singh Gill; three sisters—Amy Christensen, Ann Stevenson, and Florence Ashby; seven children—Vilo Westwood (David), Sheila Hadden (Barney), Susan Debaene-Gill (Jan), Paul Gill (Ikumi), Janice Bunker (Stephen), Stephen Gill (Jennifer), and David Gill (Sunitha); 31 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and their families.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 11, 2021 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel at 555 E. 3230 N., Provo, Utah. Those that are not able to attend in person can join via Zoom at the following link:
