Obituary

Virgus Connell Osborne passed away November 14, 2017 in Provo, Utah. He was born Sept. 30, 1926, in Spring City, Utah, to William Virgus Osborne and Ida Athene Allred. He died at home from natural causes at the age of 91. Con had many great loves in his life-his beloved wife, Marjorie, his six lovely daughters, his sons-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his friends (some lifelong), his church, his books, the Utah mountains and traveling. He was an educator by profession, having taught, in secondary schools in Mt. Pleasant, Midvale and Provo. He joined the BYU faculty in 1965 and was later requested to join a newly created Indian Education Department. He worked in that department for some twenty years, serving as Department Chair for seven of those years. He traveled widely to reservations, throughout the western states and Canada as a consultant and a BYU representative to Lamanite Conferences and Career Days. He taught courses in Native American Studies, English Composition, Guided Studies, and Secondary Education. His degrees were from BYU (BA and MLS) and the University of Utah (Ph.D.) Con deeply cared for the native American and other multicultural students and remained in contact with many of them. Con was a veteran of the Army in World War II, participating in the occupation of Japan. He was also an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, with years of service in many varied callings. He is survived by his daughters Cherie (Paul) Thompson, Carla (Mike) Smoot, Christine Rowley, Connie (John) Howard, Cynthia (Tony) VanUitert, and Caryn (John) Crandall. He is also survived by his brother Leo (LouAnn) Osborne of Nephi. His current count of descendants is 27 grandchildren and 58 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Tuttle; parents, Virgus and Athene; a brother, Glen; and 2 grandchildren, Clayton Rowley and Melissa VanUitert. We, as a family, want to express our gratitude to Canyon Hospice, a special thanks to those who worked closely with dad: Terra, Lisa, Mary Lousie, Monica, and Toni. There will be a viewing at Walker Sanderson Mortuary on Friday evening 6-8 p.m. There will also be a viewing at the old Spring City LDS Meeting House on Saturday morning 10-10:45 a.m. followed by a funeral at 11:00. The interment is at Spring City Cemetery.
