Wayne Richard Herlin died Wednesday, August 3, 2022, in Provo, Utah, at the age of 94. He is survived by five children and their spouses: Richard (Ann) Herlin of Park City, UT; Kenneth (LeAnne) Herlin of Kearns, UT; William (Julie) Herlin of Wilsonville, OR; Thomas (Carolyn) Herlin of Highlands Ranch, CO; and Rebecca (Alex) Stickler of Bealeton, VA; nineteen grandchildren; and sixteen (soon to be eighteen) great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Isbell Herlin; a son, David; two grandchildren; and four siblings.

Wayne was born May 20, 1928, to M. Arnold and Leone Herlin, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He graduated from South High School in 1945. He studied English at the University of Utah, graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1953. In 1956 he earned a master's degree in education from Stanford University. He then returned to the University of Utah to pursue a doctorate in educational psychology, which he completed in 1963. Early in his career, he was a junior high and high school English teacher and a high school counselor. In 1964, he joined the faculty at Brigham Young University, where he taught until his retirement in 1995. His professional work focused on reading, study skills, and academic counseling. He was assigned several leadership roles while at BYU, including Associate Director of the Counseling and Development Center and Assistant Dean of Student Life.

While at the University of Utah, he met his wife, Joan. They were married November 25, 1953, in the Manti Utah LDS Temple. At the time of her death (September 2021), they had been married for 67 years. They made their home in Salt Lake City and, later, Orem, Utah. Wayne served in many callings for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including stake mission president, bishop, branch president at the Provo Missionary Training Center, and stake high councilor. As a young man, he served a full-time mission in the Japanese Mission (1949-52). He later served two missions with his wife: a full-time proselytizing mission in the Japan Tokyo North Mission (1995-97), and a part-time service mission at the Provo Missionary Training Center (1999-2005). He served his country in the Army Corps of Engineers (1945-47) and the Counter-intelligence Corps (1953-55), attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class. Wayne left behind a legacy of service, teaching and learning, and, above all, love for family.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 9, 11:00 a.m. at the Hillcrest 4th Ward meetinghouse, 440 East 800 South, Orem. Visitation will be at the same location, 9:30-10:30 a.m. A live broadcast of services will begin at 11am on www.walkersanderson.com.
