Yoshiko Fox passed away peacefully Sunday, April 22, 2018, at Spring Gardens Assisted living Center, Lindon, Utah, surrounded by her family, and her husband of 58 years, Reginald Thomas Fox, Jr. She was welcomed home by her parents, Seie and Kame Yamashiro, her younger sister, Matsuko, (who all passed away during WW2), an older sister, Kiyo, a brother, Seijun, and her granddaughter, Elizabeth Daniels Dunn. and many other friend; and family. Yoshiko Yamashiro was born Sept. 2, 1926 in her home in Yamashiro, Ishikawa, Okinawa, Japan, a,d lived her 91 years In various parts of the world - including the island of Tenian, a small island in the Mariana Islands, for her elementary and middle school years; then because she was at the top of her class sh-9 was recruited at age 15, to move to Osaka for nursing school and to provide service during WW2. She was finally able to return home after the War, to her remaining family and a decimated, Okinawa under the control of the US Military. She was able to get a job in the dispensary on Naha Air Base, where she met her husband, Reg, in 1959. Reg finished his time with the Air Force and moved the family to Brooklyn, NY. Yoshiko learned how to speak proper English while in Okinawa, but realized that she needed to become proficient in the thick Brooklyn version of English. While in Brooklyn, she studied the LDS church, which Reg had joined while In Japan, and after two years chose to get baptized. They then traveled by bus to attend BYU in Provo, Utah, where their family grew with the birth of Michael in 1962. After his schooling, they moved lo Shelley, Idaho, where Reg worked as a professional Boy Scout Executive, and Yosh worked as the camp nurse at several Scout camps during the summer. They then left Idaho for Chicago, and raised their family in Oak Lawn, IL, where they served in the leadership of the Chicagoland Okinawan Club, were active In the LOS church, and their community until they moved. After retiring, they moved to New Smyrna Beach, Florida to care for Reg's mother. Then they chose to relocate to Orem, and then Provo, Utah to be close to their children and grandchildren. Yoshiko was always very active, from the time she was young. She was the first girl to ride a bike on her island and won the Sports Day races nearly every year. She played tennis into her 70's, then continued into her 90's doing Senior Yoga, Pilates, Water Zumba, and then visiting the fitness center daily at Spring Gardens. She was well known for her delicious cooking and her amazing garden, both of which she shared generously with friends and family. She could sew a beautiful dress using newspaper to make her own pattern, made quilts, and made a needlepoint picture for each grandchild. She was stilled at many things, but she will be remembered and loved for living the Savior's example of one "who went about doing good". She enjoyed serving others in a quiet way, and was loved where ever she went for her kindness and her thoughtful ways. Yoshiko Fox will continue to be loved and missed by many friends and family, including her husband, Reg; her children, Jane (Michael) Daniels; Michael (Rebecca) Fox; her grandchildren, Jon (Tina) Daniels, Malt Dunn ( Liz's husband), Joshua (Hannah) Daniels, Alicia (Mathew) Ellenberger, Rachel, and Jacob Daniels; her 3 Great Grandchildren-Maxwell, Jocelyn, and Zachary Daniels; and her remaining siblings in Okinawa - Junko, Yukiko, and Sodako Yamashiro. Funeral services will be held at Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, 646 East 800 North, in Orem, on May 19th, 11 am, with a viewing from 9:45-10:45 am, when the rest of the family will be able to return to Utah. The family would like to thank Paul Roberts, Yoshiko's hospice nurse, and her CNA, Michelle, along with all the staff at Spring Gardens for their loving care.
